Yes, there is such a thing as bad vitamins, even vitamin supplements that can do you harm.
And, in view of the fact that many health professionals don’t know the difference between good and bad nutritional supplements, we come back to the statement that I often make:
Your doctor is not responsible for your health, you are.
There are countless nutritional products on the market that, in my opinion, should not go into the body. Yes, the label may look great, and they may be sold by what seems to be a reputable source, such as your local pharmacy, grocery store, or big box store, they may be heavily advertised on national television.
Isn’t that reputable enough?
The answer is a huge NO!
Those are some of the worst sources of nutritional supplements.
Your healthcare professional may recommend or sell a specific line of products in their office. Still, there’s no guarantee on the quality of the products either, because, unfortunately, most healthcare providers simply do not have the knowledge to accurately assess the quality of a nutritional supplement.
The science of nutrition and nutritional supplementation is vast and years of study and learning are necessary to master it. It is not taught in medical schools, and I mean no criticism when I say that the medical health professional who has spent the time and effort to gain more than a superficial understanding of it is extremely rare.
Health professionals who are untrained and unlicensed in the area of prescription drugs cannot legally prescribe them. Likewise, I believe that a provider who is not adequately trained and skilled in the vast field of nutritional supplementation should not make supplement recommendations. Because they almost always get it wrong!
The Wrong Supplements Can Actually Harm You!
It’s not just that the wrong supplements don’t work, they can actually be harmful.
Here’s an example: Many health providers recommend vitamin D3. But, vitamin D3 mobilizes calcium in the body and increases the intestinal absorption of that dangerous mineral. However, once the calcium is in the bloodstream, D3 has no control over where it goes, so it ends up in soft tissues and arteries where it does not belong. Calcium in the wrong places is harmful. Calcium in the arteries can cause heart attacks that can kill you.
For this reason, I believe that vitamin D3 should never be taken without adequate amounts of vitamin K2 (MK7) being taken as well. The K2 directs the calcium into the bones and teeth where it belongs and keeps it out of the soft tissues where it does harm. And, unfortunately, even most combination supplements that contain both vitamins D3 and K2, do not contain enough K2.
Your Calcium Supplement Can Kill You!
Another prevalent error made by health professionals is prescribing calcium supplements for bone health.
This is wrong for many reasons, the first one being that calcium supplements will do little to nothing for bone health. The second is that calcium supplements have been shown to cause a long list of health problems, including
